The Jane Austen Book Club

A Girl's Night Out

If you can guess by reading my profile, I have a BA degree in English Literature. One author that is a of mine, of course, is Jane Austen. Kari and I share the same love for literature and poetry. When she was a little girl I took her to see the movie Emma in 1996 with Gwyneth Paltrow and she was able to see that her favorite TV show in the 90's called Clueless was taken from the Emma storyline. Here is what they say on the web about it HERE

Unfortunately, I did fall asleep during the movie so I will have to watch the end of it before I send it back to Hollywood Video. Kari says she watched it to the end but she won't tell me about the ending... the good daughter that she is. I am grateful that I have still the closeness with my 27 year old daughter at time like I did when she was a girl. It was like old times.

Happy March!

Girls Slumber Party!!!

Today I had to be at work at 7 am, one hour early. We put on the Educator's Breakfast which is an annual event. We bring the career specialists and high school counselors to the college for breakfast and to update them on our programs and services plus any changes. It was over at 11 am and we were ready to call it a day... but we ended our day at 4 pm.

Kari and I planned a girl's night. I went to the video rental store and rented a few chick flicks... got some food... and popcorn... and we are good to go. We are going to watch movies at her place tonight into the night. Of course, I will probably fall asleep. My grandsons are there too. I haven't seen them all week because I have been sick etc. So we are going to hang out together.

Tomorrow we will do something fun together. Dave has to go back to North Carolina next week (which he isn't looking forward to) on Sunday.

Well, someone get the popcorn going... movies are calling me.

Happy Sadie Hawkins Day!

Go Out and Get Your Man!

ESOL

This evening I went to one of the high schools where we have one of our ESOL classes to present to those in the class regarding going on to college. Mostly there were those that speak Spanish. Thank Goodness I grew up in So California where I had 5 years of Spanish in school. But not only that, my step mother Eva is Latina. She spoke Spanish around us... but I would always speak back to her in English. I had also a best friend and roomate in Huntington Beach when I was 18 that spoke (and still does) Spanish... which came in handy where we worked which was a mall called South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA. Teresa (my friend) doesn't look Latina and she would surprise many when she would bust out speaking to Spanish speakers in their language. Actually I did that tonight... I started out asking a question in Spanish like I would have done in Cali. All their heads looked up quickly surprised that I could but a sentence quickly. I did that so that they would warm up to me and they did. Most of the time they are the ones struggling with a new language, and they could see that I too was about at the same level they are only in Spanish. I realize now that I should have kept practicing and learned to speak Spanish completely.

I am still not completely well... but I am getting better. Hugs

Another Long Under the Weather Day

I went to a conference today at near the Seattle airport. I had spent time in that particular hotel at about 10 years ago at a few conferences. It was a little bit of "going back into time" for me today because I could remember events and comments from people long gone now when I worked for the school district that was at that hotel at those events. It is hard to believe but I have a history here in Seattle. I always think in terms of the fact that I am a transplant from California. But I have been here in WA since 1993 which is 15 years. It is even hard for me to believe and yet I lived it.

Well the conference was very good. It was about college recruitment and retention with this generation etc. Afterwards I went back to the college to get the bags out for an event that the Business Ed department.

I am now at home watching AI while I am typing this out on my phone with my feet up. I haven't been around the boys for the past few days. I really miss them since they give me so much joy and are fun. But no use trying to go to work and be sick with a cold when Kari can take over for a few days. It is good for them to be with their mom too and not be exposed again to more germs.

I am not that impressed with the girls. Maybe it is just me. I liked watching the boys better yesterday. I even voted for a few. I gave two votes to David A.. I agree with Darylynn about him. I think he is my favorite too.

Until tomorrow. I got to get some sleep and try to get better. Hugs

A Sunday At Home with All of Hollywood :-)

The Kodak Theatre In LA

Tonight was the Academy Awards. I took this picture when I was visiting my folks last year in April. Dave and Aaron had never been to Hollywood, so I put visiting the Kodak Theatre as one of our stops since we have watched so much American Idol. I, of course, had seen this all before but it was more fun showing them around watching their expressions.

Looking Into the Building from the Street

This is probably the exact spot where many of the celebrities were standing before going into the building. There are many stairs to get to the doors of the theatre. Many of the stores fronts were covered for the Red Carpet Activities. It was great how they covered everything for the rain... I was a little concerned. It doesn't happen much but I thought they handled the rain well.

Aaron and Spiderman (?)

When a tourist goes to the Kodak Theatre, there are a few actors in character. This is Aaron, of course, with Spiderman. I was approached by "Jack Sparrow" which I thought was very good at acting his part. (I can't find that photo of Jack and I but if I do I will post it later.) You pay them a few dollars to have a picture taken with them. This guy made it plain that was what he expected... which was OK but it surprised my husband and Aaron. They looked shocked but I quickly paid the guy. They aren't so use to directness like I am having come from LA myself.

I thought the dresses were very elegant. The one that I think I liked the best was Anne Hathaway's red dress. There were many red dresses so red I guess is really in this year. At least that is a color I was wear with an olive complexion. I also liked Hillary Swank's black dress and hair too.

Riley and I actually went to church today even though I wasn't feeling all that great. As the day went on, I felt worse. So I took a nap but it didn't help much. Riley woke up from his nap as if he had a fever and it broke. My problems are my nose and sinus'... and I ache. I don't like the ache part because that means something isn't going to go away overnight probably. I am just going to make this really quick so that I can go back and lay down again. I may not end up going to work tomorrow. Am lucky that I could actually take the day off and not disturb anything too important. I also have my work laptop that I can telecommute on. I haven't heard from Dave today except from text. He is visiting his family and if I was trying to do that over a weekend, I don't think I would call much either... that's OK. He comes home tomorrow. Probably to a sick wife. Anyway, good night... Hugs
